Hashes in Ruby

After class last night I went back to go over hashes in Ruby. What better place to work than McNally Jackson’s Bookstore! Yesterday was one of the first warm days so I took a nice long walk before settling down to work at this cute little bookstore. They have awesome coffee too which by the end of the day was a great treat!

While I was at this beautiful coffee shop I learned about hashes in Ruby. Here is a little brief intro to hashes! (Click on the image to read about the willy_wonka hash)

Movies and Coffee website has been launched! I uploaded all my files last night and was happy to wake up this morning to a live site. The hardest part of the site was the forms section on the contact page. I would like to learn more about PHP and how it is able to generate the numbers to verify the person who is about to submit the message. The website was a lot of fun to make and I am so excited to share it!

Throughout the course I will keep working on this site and add new features, so stay tuned!

Movies + Coffee = first project!

As part of our pre-work for school we had to take part in the Skillshare class called, “Build a HTML and CSS Website From Scratch” by Jonathan Grover. After I went through and watched all the videos I started on the project. After playing around with a few different concepts for a site I decided to make a fun site about movies and coffee. I was really excited to learn about sprites in one of the videos and made two of them for my project using Illustrator. The two that I made are below and soon you are going to be able to see them featured on the home page of my new site!

If you want to learn about sprites too here is a great site: css-tricks.com

And then I asked myself…

How did I did decide to study programming full time?

I went to college for photography and never thought that I would love to work on a computer all day. My favorite camera to use was a 120 mm Yasihka D camera and I never really enjoyed working with digital cameras. It was after I graduated from college that I started working as a retoucher. I slowly started to enjoy working on the computer and wanted to learn more about it. After work I started taking night classes in graphic design. I started to build up a portfolio of graphic design work and wanted to put all my projects onto a website. To learn about web design I took some continuing ed class at the Fashion Institute of Techology. I really loved working with HTML, but very quickly realized that you also have to use CSS to give any sort of styling to the HTML. Once I started to learn about HTML and CSS I realized I was barely scratching the surface of learning about web design and development. Other students started to tell me about JavaScript, jQuery, Ruby which I wanted to learn too! There are so many different elements to websites that I felt there were not enough hours in the day to learn it all. I also discovered that learning it all on my own was not going to be the best solution. That’s when I applied to Flatiron School! Going to school full time has been amazing and I am so excited to keep you posted about all my coding adventures!
